Spesies ini (Juniperus virginiana) merupakan konifer atau softwood yang banyak ditemukan di sepanjang kawasan tengah selatan AS dan seringkali disebut “Eastern red cedar“ atau red juniper cedar. Pohon ini cenderung tumbuh hingga ketinggian sekitar 30 sampai 35 m dengan diameter batang sebesar 1,0 sampai 1,2 m.

Kayunya memiliki perbedaan yang sangat jelas antara gubal berwarna kuning pucat dan empulur berwarna merah hingga coklat ungu muda. Uratnya lurus dan memiliki tekstur halus namun kayunya memiliki banyak mata kayu.
