American Tulipwood - Sebuah alternatif untuk Rubberwood

Tulipwoodadalah sebuah spesies yang sangat menarik, asli hanya di Amerika Utara saja, dan kini memainkan peran yang kian besar di industri kayu Asia Tenggara. Saat para pabrikan semakin sulit mencari sumber spesies lokal, terutama dengan harga yang dapat diterima, Tulipwood dapat memainkan peran yang positif sebagai sebuah alternatif yang layak. Sebagai pengganti untuk sejumlah spesies seperti Rubberwood dan Ramin kayu ini dapat bertindak sebagai sumberdaya tambahan dan bukan sebagai kompetitor! Seringkali dirujuk sebagai “Yellow Poplar” di AS, kayu ini bukan poplar namun berasal dari famili magnolia dan karenanya jauh lebih keras.

 

Secara tradisional, Tulipwood dianggap mahal meskipun perbedaan harga dengan beberapa spesies tropis kini telah jauh berkurang dalam beberapa waktu terakhir akibat kenaikan permintaan – dan, yang tidak kalah pentingnya, akibat menurunnya nilai Dolar AS. Pohon itu tumbuh besar dan tinggi yang memberikan spesifikasi yang lebih baik dibanding banyak hardwood lain, sehingga hasil Tulipwood umumnya baik dan sangat mudah diperkirakan dengan spesifikasi lebar dan panjang yang panjang – yang berarti bahwa sambungan jari, yang masih kurang menarik pada kayu display furnitur, menjadi tidak diperlukan. Kayu ini populer di Italia di mana ekspor kayu Ramin telah dilarang dan selanjutnya ekspor kayu Ramin gergajian telah dibatasi. (Italia telah menggunakan Ramin untuk furnitur, kayu bentukan (moulding) dan bingkai foto cukup lama. Jadi Tulipwood menyediakan sebuah alternatif, dan menjadi salah satu spesies paling penting yang diimpor oleh para pabrikan Italia.) Tulipwood merupakan penghasil benih yang produktif dan karenanya mudah dipertahankan dalam kerangka kerja legislasi pemanenan dan pengelolaan hutan di AS. Ia meningkatkan volume pertumbuhannya dengan regenerasi alami – yang senantiasa menjadi ukuran sejati keberlanjutan. Tulipwood karenanya merupakan salah satu spesies hardwood AS yang paling berkelanjutan, meningkat dari tahun ke tahun, dipanen secara selektif dari hutan yang beregenerasi secara alami, dan kini mencakup sekitar 9 % dari total sumberdaya tegakan hardwood Amerika. Kayu ini karenanya sangat diterima di pasar yang peka secara lingkungan.  

 

KARAKTERISTIK

Empulurnya berwarna putih krem dan mungkin bergaris gubal yang bervariasi dari coklat kekuning-kuningan pucat sampai hijau zaitun, yang secara bertahap menjadi gelap jika terpapar cahaya. Kayu ini memiliki tekstur medium sampai halus dan berurat lurus. Pohonnya memiliki sedikit karakteristik alami dalam bentuk mata kayu, karena ia tumbuh dengan batang yang tinggi bersih dan sedikit cabang bawah.

 

SIFAT TEKNIS & KERJA

 

American Tulipwoodmemiliki sifat pembentukan dan pengetaman yang istimewa. Kayu ini memiliki rasio kekuatan ke berat yang tinggi dan cocok untuk laminasi untuk penggunaan struktural. Kayu ini digergaji dengan baik dan memiliki sifat pemahatan, pembulatan (turning), pelubangan (boring) dan pengeboran (drilling) yang baik. Kayu ini juga dapat dipaku, dilem dan disekrup dengan baik dengan sedikit kecenderungan untuk belah. Kayu ini mudah kering dengan degradasi minimal. Tulipwood menerima dan menahan cat dan pewarna dengan sangat baik dan dalam performanya sangat stabil ketika kering.

 

Tulipwoodtelah digunakan oleh Dewan Ekspor Hardwood Amerika (American Hardwood Export Council/AHEC) dalam promosi terbaru di Indonesia, yang terbaru di Kompetisi Desain Furnitur Indonesia, untuk mempromosikan kesesuaian dan karakteristiknya yang bagus untuk pembuatan furnitur sebagai pilihan alternatif bagi para desainer Indonesia.

 

Penggunaan umumnya adalah untuk sambungan kayu, furnitur, pembuatan panel, kayu bentukan, bingkai foto, pintu dan lemari dapur, pembulatan & pemahatan.
